UltraTap is what happens when you give a delay dozens of tape heads and let you move them: hold a chord and it can bloom into a reverse pad, stutter into a rhythmic pattern or smear into a glitchy reverb that no plate ever made.

Which Eventide delay is this?

UltraTap is not a conventional echo. It builds delays from up to 64 taps whose spacing and levels you control, which is how it produces rhythmic patterns, reverse swells, pad-like volume ramps and glitchy reverbs. For classic delay voices, tape echo and a looper, look at the Eventide TimeFactor; for gravity-bending ambience, the Blackhole; for a single modulated analog-style repeat, the Rose. The H9 Harmonizer also includes an UltraTap algorithm if you prefer one box.

Why guitarists choose the UltraTap

• You choose how many taps make up the delay, from 1 to 64, so the same pedal covers a single repeat, a rhythmic pattern and a dense wash of reflections.
• Spread sets the spacing of the taps: centered gives even spacing, while turning it either way bunches the taps toward the start or the end of the burst for accelerating and slowing patterns.
• Taper shapes the level of the taps across the burst, which is how the pedal makes reverse-style swells and pad-like volume ramps.
• Slurm smears the taps together with detuning, modulation and diffusion into reverb- and chorus-like textures without a separate reverb pedal.
• Chop applies LFO or envelope-driven gating to the taps, so pads become stutters and sustained chords become sequencer-like parts.
• A dedicated TAP footswitch sets delay time or tempo, and 5 onboard presets plus up to 127 over MIDI let a subtle doubling and a full ambient collapse coexist in one set.

Controls

Six knobs each carry a second parameter, reached with the 2nd-function button.

• MIX / Tone Balances the taps against the dry signal; second function shapes the tone of the taps.
• TAPS / Slurm Sets the number of taps (1–64); second function smears them into reverb- and chorus-like textures.
• LENGTH / Predelay Sets the time span the taps occupy; second function sets a pre-delay of up to 1 second.
• FEEDBACK / Chop Recirculates the tap cluster for longer, denser trails; second function selects the Chop modulation (Triangle, Sawtooth, Ramp, Square, Sample and Hold, plus envelope-driven Swell and Trigger ranges).
• SPREAD / Spd-Rise-Rel Sets the spacing between taps; second function sets the Chop LFO speed or envelope rise and release.
• TAPER / Out Lvl Shapes the fade-in or fade-out of the taps; second function sets the output level.
• ACTIVE footswitch Engages the effect; dual-action, so it works latching or momentary, and it also loads presets.
• TAP footswitch Sets delay time in seconds or tempo in BPM; press and hold to switch it to preset select mode (presets 1–5).
• Guitar/Line switch Rear-panel level matching for guitar, synth, an effects loop or an audio interface.
• Mono/Stereo switch Tells the TRS input whether to read a mono tip signal or a true stereo tip-and-ring pair.

Connections & Power

Runs on a 9V DC center-negative supply through a 5.5 mm / 2.1 mm barrel plug and draws 300 mA, so it needs an isolated output rated 300 mA or more rather than a shared daisy chain. A universal power supply with US, EU, UK, JP and AU adapters is included; there is no battery operation. Bypass is selectable between Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX and Kill dry, so you can run relay (true) bypass at the front of a board or keep the buffer and effect tails alive inside an amp loop.

FAQ

What is a multi-tap delay? Rather than one repeat that decays, a multi-tap delay creates several taps at different times and levels. UltraTap lets you set how many there are, how they are spaced and how their levels change, which is why it can imitate rhythms, swells and reverbs.

Can UltraTap make reverse sounds? Yes. Set Taper so the tap levels ramp upward and the burst swells in like a reversed note; combine it with Spread for accelerating or slowing patterns.

What does Slurm do? It smears the taps into each other with detuning, modulation and diffusion, moving the sound from discrete echoes toward a glitchy, reverb-like wash.

Does UltraTap have tap tempo? Yes. The TAP footswitch sets delay time in seconds or tempo in BPM, and an external aux switch on the EXP jack or MIDI clock can control tempo as well.

Can I use it in an effects loop? Yes. Set the rear switch to Line and choose the DSP+FX or Buffered bypass mode so tails continue when the effect is switched out.

Will a daisy chain power it? Not reliably. It draws 300 mA at 9V center negative, so use an isolated output rated 300 mA or more.
