About This Item

Death by Audio Evil Filter is a psycho multimode filter with a separate fuzz section. A medical grade IC drives a hyper precise high pass, band pass and low pass filter with two resonance ranges, and the Evil Fuzz section adds blooming compression, octaves and wavefolding.

Controls: Filter Freq, Filter Output, Filter Resonance, Fuzz Output, filter mode selector, Norm Res or x10 switch, fuzz type switch, and two footswitches. EXP/CV jack for expression pedals or control voltage. Power: 9 V DC, 2.1 mm center negative, 21 mA, 9 V battery supported. True bypass. Enclosure 19.68 x 11.99 x 6.1 cm including hardware, 25 oz. Handmade in New York City.

Description

A surgical filter bolted to a completely unhinged fuzz. Evil Filter is for the truly wild: a medical grade IC creates a hyper precise multimode filter with high pass, band pass and low pass modes and two resonance ranges, while a separate Evil Fuzz section adds blooming compression, octaves up and down and snarling wavefolding.

Which Death by Audio filter is this?

  • Crossover Fuzz: two filtered fuzz bands with independent outputs.
  • Disturbance: filter, flanger and phaser modulation with a freezable LFO.
  • Germanium Filter: a vintage germanium drive with a single sweeping filter.

Evil Filter is the one with two footswitches, so the filter and the fuzz are independent. Use it as an extreme parked wah, a resonant sweep with an expression pedal, or a fuzz that folds in on itself.

Why guitarists choose the Evil Filter

  • Two footswitches mean the filter and the Evil Fuzz can be used alone or stacked in either order of intent.
  • Three filter modes cover high pass spikes, wah like band pass and low pass weight from one knob.
  • The x10 resonance range pushes the filter into self oscillation with enveloping waveforms and octave generation.
  • The EXP/CV jack gives hands free filter sweeps from an expression pedal or a control voltage source.
  • The Filter Freq knob sets the top of the expression range, so you can limit how far the sweep goes.
  • True bypass, 21 mA current draw and 9 V battery support.

Controls and switches

  • FILTER FREQ sets the cutoff, or the center in band pass mode, and also sets the high point of the EXP/CV range.
  • FILTER OUTPUT sets the output volume of the filter, which acts as the master volume when both sections are on because the filter follows the fuzz.
  • FILTER RESONANCE runs from minimal to sharp on NORM RES, and from subtle to self oscillation with enveloping waveforms and octave generation on x10.
  • FUZZ OUTPUT sets the level of the fuzz section.
  • The FILTER SELECTOR chooses HIGH PASS, BAND PASS or LOW PASS.
  • The RESONANCE switch chooses NORM RES or x10.
  • The FUZZ TYPE switch chooses a cleaner, more driving fuzz or a blasted out, blooming voice.
  • Two footswitches: one for the filter, one marked EVIL FUZZ.

Power and pedalboard compatibility

  • Runs on 9 V DC, 2.1 mm barrel, center negative.
  • Current draw is 21 mA, so budget that on your supply.
  • A 9 V battery can also power it.
  • True bypass means it is completely out of the signal path when it is off, so place it wherever the chain sounds best.
  • Jacks sit along the top edge, which keeps patch cables out of the row in front.
  • Routing: Mono (single IN and OUT shown on the manual panel diagram).
  • It measures 19.68 x 11.99 x 6.1 cm including hardware, so measure your row before ordering.

FAQ

Can I use it as a wah? Yes. Band pass mode with an expression pedal on the EXP/CV jack gives an extreme wah style sweep, and the Filter Freq knob sets how far up the sweep travels.

What expression pedals work with it? The manual states that it works with standard 10 k expression pedals, with less range when a mono cable is used.

What control voltage does it accept? The manual says the jack also accepts plus and minus 5 V CV, while the product page quotes roughly 0 to 3.0 V. Start low and increase.

What does the x10 resonance setting do? It multiplies the resonance range so the filter moves from subtle emphasis into self oscillation, generating enveloping waveforms and octaves.

Do the two sections work independently? Yes. Each has its own footswitch. When both are on, the filter follows the fuzz, so Filter Output becomes the master level.

Can it run on a battery? Yes, a 9 V battery is supported. Current draw is 21 mA.

Is it true bypass? Yes.
